CAIRO, Feb 9: More than 200,000 people attended the wedding of a couple in the heart of Egypt’s political revolt.

Psychologist Dr Ahmad Zafaan, 29, married Oula Abdul Hamid, 22, in Tahrir Square, Cairo, the centre of pro-democracy action against President Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule.

Two weeks of demonstrations left 100 people dead on Egypt’s streets.

The newly-weds first set up camp in the square on January 28, where Dr Zafaan treats the injured.

He said after yesterday’s Muslim ceremony: “These protesters are family now.” His new wife added: “I am very happy about tying the knot in this holy square which is witnessing the rebirth of our nation.”

Yesterday the government tried to prop up the ailing economy by selling £1.5billion in short term debt. The protests are costing £193 million a day.
