PEPE REINA for £6m??

The failure to sign Mark Schwarzer will cost Arsenal dear - and they only have themselves to blame..

..a complete farce and has left the Aussie keeper in limbo at Fulham and Manuel Almunia in a very uncomfortable position

..Arsenal's idea they could get REINA for around £6m was a complete non-starter.. hah hah hah!!

Arsenal went back to Fulham and said the offer was still on the table. That is where the story about Arsenal going back with the same offer comes from. Fulham knocked it back again .. merry go round

Wenger, who has annoyed some by spending the whole World Cup working for French TV station TF1 rather than signing new players, failed.. smart ass pundits

Lehmann was dropped, Almunia began to get more games and Arsenal have not won a trophy since.. never

All of Arsenal's title rivals strengthened. Arsenal didn't..yet still asked their supporters to pay sky-high ticket prices.

PEPE REINA for £6m Professor??

If Wenger logged onto the internet after the transfer window shut at 6pm on Tuesday it would have made for very unpleasant reading.

It is hard to remember an occasion when Arsenal fans have been so disillusioned with their most successful post-war manager.

SEPT '98 Revisited

Ahmad Irfan/Impact International, London.
Politics of the poisoned pen

FLASHBACK SEPTEMBER '98 Fourteen years ago this day, the nation was shocked to learn about the sacking of deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, setting the path for a political crisis which has permanently, changed Malaysia's political culture. A few days earlier, AHMAD IRFAN of Impact, London, wrote this cover story.

In the neo-feudal Malaysian political culture, if you cannot deal with someone politically, you circulate a poison-pen letter. In the last decade and a half, quite a few poison-pen letters have been going around the political circuit, one time or another, but none as obscene as the one which went into circulation mid-1997.

The target: Anwar Ibrahim, Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy President of Umno (United Malays National Organisation) and the named successor of Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamed; named by Dr. Mahathir himself.

Clearly the poison pen letter writer had someone else in view as the next prime minister, and, therefore, the first step was to throw mud at and discredit Anwar Ibrahim before putting forward the name of the rival candidate. For a moral politician like Anwar, more appropriately, the charge had to be immorality, adultery.

We Are What We Eat

My 5 Favourite Dried Fruits and Their Health Benefits

We all know that fruits and vegetables are good for us, especially fresh ones, and when they are in season. However, dried fruits have theirs own indisputable health benefits, too. There are many delicious dried fruits out there, and you can find five of my favorites below.

Dates

Although dried dates are higher in calories than fresh ones, dates are loaded with iron, fiber, iron, niacin, potassium, vitamin A, B, calcium, phosphorous, and copper.

They are used to help with constipation, anemia, fatigue, and also a preventive to abdominal cancer.

Raisins
Raisins are one of nature’s sweet treats. They provide 70% pure fructose, fat free, cholesterol free, low in sodium, and supply a good source of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, iron, potassium, and calcium.

Raisins are said to help with bone density, healthy gums and teeth. The key ingredient in raisins is phytonutrients, mainly olenolic acid, protect from gum disease, and cavities. They are also beneficial for your eye sight just as carrots. Use raisins in your oatmeal, or sprinkle on your salad, or in your cooking and baking.

Apricots

Apricots are full of dietary fiber and beta-carotene, as well as supply a great source of vitamin A, C, magnesium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, silicon, and potassium. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant found in apricots.

According to the American Cancer Society, apricots and other foods that are rich in carotenes may lower the risk of cancers in the larynx, esophagus, and lungs. Just five dried apricots give you 36 percent of the daily value for vitamin A.

If you are sensitive to sulfites, which are used to preserve bright orange color of apricots, buy dried organic apricots instead, since federal law prohibits the use of preservative in organic foods.

But quite expensive here in Malaysia.

Cranberries

Cranberries contain powerful antioxidants, which can cut bad cholesterol, and help fight infection. Cranberry juice helps clean the urinary tract, and may prevent tumors from growing quickly. Dried cranberries can be served in oatmeal, cereal, and salad, as well as baking.

Just one-half cup of dried cranberries provides about 13 milligrams of vitamin C, and 4 grams of fiber.

Can be found in leading hypermarkets only, not in any of our neighborhood grocer.

Prunes

Prunes are a good source of fiber, vitamin A, potassium, and copper. They can also help with weight loss and normal blood sugar levels. Just a quarter-cup of prunes give you 16.9 percent of daily value for vitamin A, in the form of beta-carotene.

Beta-carotene has been shown in studies to shut down free radicals, and prevent a variety of diseases such as atherosclerosis, colon cancer, and reduced inflammatory in asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
