Visiting Barisan Nasional leaders are becoming familiar and frequent visitors to Sabah and Sarawak of late, with the prime minister, especially, bearing reassuring gifts in deed and kind almost like an absent parent fearful of the loss of his children's affections. This week, however, the gift of his visit was accompanied by the spectre of a feared and dominating stepmother.
Wearing his three hats of leader of the federal government as well as leader of the ruling coalition and dominant party, Datuk Seri Najib Razak used the occasion of his visit to provide a not too gentle reminder of the fragility of federalism in Malaysia against the divisive power politics of ethnicity as practised by the Barisan Nasional.
