KUALA LUMPUR: No amount of money can be used as a reason to justify legalising sports gambling.

Although the recent government decision is expected to rake in hundreds of millions in taxes, MCA vice president Gan Ping Sieu said the association did not endorse gambling, legal or otherwise.

However, since the decision had been made, he urged the government to impose strict rules to control the maximum amount in bets, the minimum age of punters, location and operating hours of betting outlets.

"These regulations must be put in place and stringently enforced to prevent or reduce the prevalence of social ills associated with gambling," Gan said in a statement.

"Social problems that may arise from the controversial decision must not be taken lightly.

"The government must conduct social studies immediately to better understand the impact legalised gambling may have on society."
