Anwar said by doing so, the government would save RM40 billion a year.
"The government has been providing subsidies of RM20 billion a year to the IPP, namely Genting Sanyen, Malakof and YTL Power.
"(And) based on PEMUDAH report, the country has lost a total of RM20 billion a year through leakages from corruption and government inefficiency and so on.
"If we solve this alone, we can be free of the problems alleged by Idris Jala and save our country," he said in a ceramah at Padang Perdana last night, in conjunction with the PKR annual congress being held here.
Minister in the prime minister's department Idris Jala had recently claimed that Malaysia will go bankrupt in 2019 if it continued to provide the subsidies for fuel and other necessities.
Anwar also questioned why the ordinary people were being victimised.
"Why do people become victims? Why not remove the subsidies from those big corporations?" he asked.
